Newborn baby photoshoot FAQ Fingerlakes NY
If you're expecting a baby, chances are you've started looking into newborn photography and have a lot of questions. As a newborn photographer serving Rochester, NY and the surrounding areas, these are some of the questions I get asked most often.
Hopefully this helps make planning your newborn session a little easier!
1. When Should I Book My Newborn Session?
The best time to book your newborn photography session is during your second or third trimester. This helps ensure availability around your due date.
Don't worry—we don't schedule your session for the exact day your baby is born. Instead, I reserve a spot on my calendar based on your due date and we finalize everything once baby arrives.
Newborn sessions are typically photographed within the first two to three weeks after birth, when babies tend to be extra sleepy and curly.
2. What Should My Baby Wear?
The short answer? Almost nothing!
For most newborn photos, I provide wraps, blankets, outfits, headbands, bonnets, and props. Many of my favorite newborn portraits feature babies wrapped simply or photographed in neutral tones that keep the focus where it belongs—on your sweet new baby.
If you have a special outfit or family heirloom you'd like incorporated into your newborn photography session, you're always welcome to bring it along.
3. Do Parents and Siblings Need to Be in the Photos?
Not at all—but I highly recommend it.
Your baby will never be this tiny again, and those first family photos often become some of the most treasured images from the entire session.
Whether you're looking for newborn photos with parents, sibling photos, or a combination of family portraits and baby-only images, we can customize the session to fit your family.
4. What If My Baby Cries or Won't Sleep?
This is probably the number one concern I hear from new parents.
The good news is that babies don't have to sleep through their entire newborn session to get beautiful images. Over my years as a newborn photographer, I've worked with babies who were sleepy, awake, fussy, gassy, hungry, and everything in between.
We take breaks as needed for feeding, diaper changes, cuddles, and comforting. The session is completely baby-led, and there is never any rush.
5. What Should I Bring to My Newborn Session?
Honestly, not much!
I recommend feeding baby right before arriving if possible and bringing extra bottles, diapers, wipes, and a pacifier if your baby uses one.
My newborn photography studio is stocked with props, wraps, blankets, headbands, and accessories, so you don't need to worry about bringing a lot of extras. The goal is to make the experience as stress-free as possible for new parents.
